This is a painting of Daisy, an Italian Greyhound.
They are such a fun breed. As stated on the Internet, "The Italian Greyhound is a small breed of dog of the sight hound type, sometimes called an "I.G.", "Iggy."
I've gotten to know the breed better due to my art and what a fabulous breed they are. They are smart - inquisitive and have the heart of a lion. Of course, there have been a few that have stolen my heart and it is easy to see why they are so popular.
Daisy's owners gave me a number of photos of her - head shots as well as movement shots. Then we met up at a dog show and I took "a lot" more...probably 75! One can never have too much reference material. When it came down to choosing which photos would be the primary reference photos they left the choices up to me. Wow - what a responsibility - but also, wow - what freedom. They didn't know what was chosen until the big reveal. Nail biting I sent the image of the finished painting to them. Here was their response, "OMG Dawn it’s perfect I love it!!"
It was a great pleasure to paint this girl. Hopefully, the painting warms their hearts for many many years.
A gallery of fine art featuring dog art, cat art, horse art and western art. For fun, I'll add some pictures of my life and animals. Enjoy!

Dottie the Italian Greyhound
This is Dottie. I met her owners last year and we discussed the possibility of me painting Dottie's portrait. As the conversation progressed, the idea of having two photos of Dottie in her portrait, a head study and a racing shot, became the goal.
Dottie's parents had some amazing reference material for photos. But, I'd never seen an IG race so I met up with them and was able to watch their dogs run in person. I took more reference photos and had a blast. Those little guys ran like rockets!!! I'd taken one of my Irish Setters with me, Bling, and someone asked me if she was racing. We all had a good laugh over that one.
For the painting, they chose to have me paint a head shot of Dottie when she was younger. She had a beautiful collar on but it obscured my view of her markings. So, they took a photo of her in without the collar. Great help!! On Dottie's neck, the colors were subdued to ensure the viewer would be drawn to Dottie's face and to also make it more of a subtle area on which the racing part of the painting would be layered.
For racing part of the painting, the lights and darks were vibrantly emphasized so it would appear Dottie was running right off the painting at you. It was important that the racing image on the painting not blend into the portrait part of the painting.
Hope you enjoy the painting of Dottie as much as I did painting it!!

Italian Greyhound
Recently finished this painting of an Italian Greyhound. The breeder was kind enough to allow me to photograph her dogs so I could add an IG to my line of reproductions.
Since I am not as knowledgeable with IGs as I'd like to be, I asked her for feedback on which of my photos represented the breed most correctly. She chose a handful of photos and then of those photos, I picked this one.
Hope the IG fancy welcomes this new print once it becomes available. Now to think of a name for the print!
